Tonight's episode of Glee

Despite the recent news about the Ohio Prevention First Act, our Big OH guilty pleasure continues to be Glee, set in my hometown of Lima, Ohio.

***Spoiler Alert***

Tonight's episode continues to depend upon the characters' ignorance about sex and reproduction. Our protagonist teacher Will Schuester hasn't caught on that his wife isn't really pregnant, observing that his pregnant student experiences morning sickness but his wife doesn't. Her attempt to gain alibi weight does blend in with the pregnancy lie as she orders a second dessert (in a restaurant set that actually looks like someplace in Lima!).

Finn spends his time working to win Rachel away from the school musical, not willing to admit to himself that he wants her personally. His excuse is that her contribution to the glee club will lift all boats, helping him get into college on a scholarship so he can provide for his child. When Rachel gets wind of his assumed fatherhood to his never-slept-with girlfriend, she flips. Yet, no one asks Finn about how Quinn actually got pregnant - an idea I find unbelievable after years of watching my football-star brother gossip with his teammates like a bunch of old ladies playing bridge. Who will be the first to ask, "So, how'd it happen?"

So, Glee fans, what was your favorite part of tonight's show:

  • "Somebody to Love" by Queen
  • Boozing Kristen Chenowith
  • "Maybe this Time" from Cabaret
  • "Alone" by Heart
  • "Last Name" by Carrie Underwood
  • Bowling (Was that stage supposed to be in Lima's Westgate Lanes?)
  • Jayne Lynch in the clip from next week: "Your husband is hiding his Hickory Farms sausage in a gift basket that doesn't belong to you."
Discuss.

Ohio Prevention First Act introduced!

The Ohio Prevention First Act was introduced today in the House by Rep. Tyrone Yates (D-Cincinnati). The bill was introduced yesterday in the Ohio Senate by Senator Teresa Fedor (D-Toledo) and eleven co-sponsors.

You can read about the specifics of the legislation over at the Coalition for Family Health website.

I though there were two interesting points from yesterday's press conference. First, Senator Fedor's remarks reflected on how work to protect women's health is a continuation of the work toward gender equality. She arrived at this point after reflecting on how the Ladies' Gallery (where the event was held) is her favorite room in the Statehouse. Her comments were received not only by event attendees, but also the portraits of suffragettes and early female legislators from Ohio history.

Rep. Yates added, “Whether you are a pro-choice or pro-life advocate, this legislation is clearly an important step in helping young men and women make smarter decisions. This issue is not about the political Left or Right; it is about doing what is right for our communities throughout the state.”

Rep. Yates also had a thought-provoking reply to supporters in the room. Before taking the podium, Yates was thanked by several health care activists for his work on the bill. His answer reflected the common-sense approach this bill takes towards protecting Ohio women and teens: "Don't thank me, This [sponsoring the bill] is easy. Everyone should be sponsoring this."

Everyone who believes in reducing STD rates and providing the education and tools to prevent unintended or unwanted pregnancies should be in favor of Prevention First. It's common-sense, and, fortunately, Tyrone Yates gets it.
