"Glee" is back! (Failed Sex Ed and Spoiler Alert)
The only Ohio-based TV drama is in its first season on Fox, and Glee is already tackling real-life sexual issues facing Ohio teens.
***Spoiler Alert***
On tonight's episode, head cheerleader Quinn Fabray told star quarterback Finn Hudson she was pregnant with his child. She told Finn that she got pregnant because of their encounter in a hot tub - an encounter without intercourse but including some premature ejaculation. Later, after Finn tells his teammate Puck about the pregnancy (are these names serious? Quinn, Finn, and Puck?), Puck confronts Quinn about their actual sexual encounter. Oh, and Quinn is the president of the Abstinence Club.
This scenario is a great example of several failings of Abstinence-Only programming. First, by not teaching teens about how to prevent pregnancy, Ab-Only lessons allow gaps in the understanding of how pregnancy occurs. If fictional McKinley High taught Comprehensive Sex Ed, then maybe Finn wouldn't buy the notion that his sperm swam through two swimsuits and a bubbling hot tub into his girlfriend's uterus.
Second, the plot line with the love triangle displays how ignorance about pregnancy causes can be exploited by some people who are not honest with their partners. When we think about pregnant teens, we often discuss the problem in this sterile vacuum, free from real-life considerations. In this case, Finn's ignorance is manipulated by Quinn to maintain her reputation as a faithful girlfriend.
Third, Ab-Only becomes useless once teens abandon abstinence principles. Quinn tells Puck that she let him have sex with her because she was drinking and she "felt fat." Had the Abstinence Club president been a member of the Condom Club, she would have known what to do after she made up her mind to allow sexual activity, and Puck would have know why protection was so important.
We'll see how the pregnancy plot-line plays out with Finn, Quinn, and Puck, and teacher's wife Terri Schuester looking for a baby after her pregnancy turns out to be a misdiagnosis. I'm sure a Juno-esque adoption will placate Fox viewers.
The secondary plot came with effeminate Kurt's attept to join the football team, "I'm here to audition for the role of kicker." Kurt's need to prove himself to his father found him doing a pre-kick warm up to Beyonce before putting one through the uprights. The only one on the team who is apparently capable of kicking, he gets a spot on the team and kicks the winning point in the next game.
Kurt's success on the field gives him the courage to admit his homosexuality to his father. The encounter is the sort of best-possible-outcome that probably doesn't happen in very many high school locker rooms.
Burt Hummel: "I've known [son Kurt was gay] since you were three. All you wanted was a pair of sensible heels. But if that's what you are, then there's nothing I can do about it."
Stay tuned for more from the kids at McKinley High.
Bonus question for Big OH readers: when Jayne Lynch's character Sue Sylvester appears on fictional local news WOHN, there's a skyline of the city beside a lake or river behind her. In landlocked Lima, Ohio, what body of water is this?
